Repair of the west chamber of the Anderten lock
The Anderten lock, also known as the "Hindenburg lock", is located in the Anderten district of Hanover. The lock overcomes a total height difference of almost 15 meters between the western section and the apex section of the Mittelland Canal.
Inspections of the structure by exposing the existing reinforced concrete wall revealed extensive corrosion damage to the reinforcement in the area of the concrete joints. The damage was so severe that the stability of the structure could no longer be guaranteed.
As a result of this damage, the WSA (Mittellandkanal/Elbe-Seitenkanal Waterways and Shipping Authority) decided to carry out emergency repairs to both lock chamber walls. The project is highly urgent due to the structural problems and the risk of congestion on the waterway. Accordingly, ZÜBLIN Bauwerkserhaltung was commissioned to repair the lower chamber walls of the west chamber of the lock.
Dimensions of the lock
- 225 m total length
- 18.9 m total height
- 42.3 m storage length
- "Two" chamber locks (east and west chamber)
- 5 tanks per chamber wall
Renovation measures to date
As a first measure, 1,800 square meters of concrete were removed using high-pressure water jets (HPW) up to a height of 7 meters and using 2 robots. The water required for the concrete removal was taken directly from the Mittelland Canal and used for the work after appropriate treatment. This resulted in 3,000 tons of demolition material with sludge. The existing reinforcement was also supplemented with 300 tons of reinforcing steel and 4,000 screw socket connections.
For the new facing shell of the chamber walls, 14,000 tie-backs were drilled and glued in at an embedment depth of up to 120 centimetres. In addition, as part of the first renovation step, metal waterstops, expansion joint and joint closure strips, web guides with edge protection and 2,500 square meters of formwork with hydraulic filling supports were installed.
As a second measure, our Torkret brand insulated existing cracks in the circulation channel and filled them on the chamber walls. 900 core drillings were carried out to a depth of up to 7 meters, which were roughened for further use using high-pressure water jets. In addition, approx. 60 tons of reinforcement were used.
