BIZ Denzlingen

Location Stuttgarter Straße 15 in Denzlingen
Denzlingenis a municipality around 10 km north of Freiburg im Breisgau .

The population is just under 14,000. The municipality's school complex includes the Erasmus Grammar School, the old building of the Ruth Cohn School, a sports hall and an outdoor sports complex. The shell of the new Ruth Cohn secondary school building will be completed by the end of 2023 on a site measuring 9,000 m².

The building is aligned north-south in its longitudinal direction, with overall dimensions of approx. 122 m long, 30 m wide and 12.5 m high. The three storeys have an average height of approx. 3.85 m - 4.35 m.

A section of the building has a single-storey basement. Approximately in the middle, a single-storey canopy made of a steel structure connects the new building with the old building. The headroom will be approx. 3.50 m.

The new school building for the association of municipalities is intended to be a model school. It achieves the goals of sustainability and pedagogy with the intrinsic means of architecture: rooms that can be used in a variety of ways, including the central zones, offer space for independent learning. The solid, load-bearing skeleton structure on the one hand, and the flexibility provided by non-load-bearing intermediate and extension elements on the other, will also allow the building to respond to new educational concepts in the future. In total, the new building will provide space for up to 900 pupils.

The project is aiming for DGNB "Sustainable Building Site" certification from the German Sustainable Building Council.

Certified by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)

Ed. Züblin AG is pursuing several goals with this project: A sustainable construction site organisation, the conservation of resources as well as the minimisation of emissions, responsibility for the health and well-being of the builders, the cultivation of good neighbourliness and, of course, high-quality construction. For this, Ed. Züblin AG was the first company to be recognised by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Selected measures in the project

  • Measures to avoid noise pollution from the construction site

The use of precast concrete elements (stairs and balconies, as well as cavity walls) makes it possible to reduce formwork work to a minimum. The system formwork for walls enables walls of all lengths to be constructed using finished formwork walls, and a building construction crane is used for the on-site transportation of both semi-finished parts and formwork. This significantly reduces sources of noise caused by moving formwork elements.

  • Measures to reduce the restrictions for residents

Deliveries are made via the driveway/schoolyard. In order to avoid restrictions, deliveries are registered in advance and the delivery is received by the foreman. The foreman serves as a guide on the access road.

  • Saving resources and reducing emissions through LEAN Construction

Through the consistent use of process planning, the ongoing construction work is synchronized and adapted to the planning specifications. This enables stable and structured work. This is accompanied by an increase in quality through efficient processes. Waste is prevented. Another method is the 5S method for order and cleanliness on the construction site.

  • Measures to reduce dust pollution from the construction site

The interior work follows the installation of the windows and doors and is therefore carried out with the façade closed. Dust work is carried out with extraction, PPE and with the windows closed.
