Konrad 2 shaft, reloading hall
Location Konrad 2 mine, Industriestrasse 55 in Salzgitter
The Konrad mine in Salzgitter is being converted into a repository for solid and solidified radioactive waste with negligible heat generation .
The Federal Company for Final Disposal (BGE) is appointed by the Federal Republic of Germany as the official representative and client and is responsible for the construction and subsequent operation of the repository.
In ZEA, A1 there is a vehicle drying facility for trucks and rail wagons, a special treatment room, a central staircase with elevator, workshops and technical rooms. The associated basement area houses the fire extinguishing control center, a collection tank for extinguishing water and rooms for treating liquid waste.
In ZEA, A2, the delivered containers are transferred from trucks and rail wagons to rail-bound industrial trucks by overhead crane. The containers are transported via a rail system with a cross-shifting system through an incoming goods inspection and a radiation protection tunnel through component A3 into the shaft conveyor system (not part of the project) and from there underground.
The ZEB buffer hall is intended to hold containers in the event of disruptions to operational processes and provide the option of temporary storage.

Certified by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)
Ed. Züblin AG is pursuing several goals with this project: A sustainable construction site organization, the conservation of resources as well as the minimization of emissions, responsibility for the health and well-being of the builders, the cultivation of good neighbourliness and, of course, high-quality construction. For this, Ed. Züblin AG was the first company to be recognized by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Selected measures in the project
-
Resource protection
CO2 emissions can be reduced by a large proportion of foot traffic on the way to and from the construction site. The use of prefabricated or semi-finished parts (walls, beams, roof trusses, roof slabs, parapets and stairs) means that a shorter construction time can be achieved. The volume of waste is also reduced thanks to the prefabricated orders.
-
Health and social affairs
The risk of accidents is reduced through the creation and application of comprehensive health and safety documents. They also help to maintain staff performance.
-
Communication
Thanks to the comprehensive public relations work of the Federal Company for Final Disposal (BGE), an extraordinarily high degree of transparency and public participation can be guaranteed.
-
Quality of the construction work
Before the order is placed, material declaration lists are used to check whether building materials and components comply with the recognized rules of technology and the contractual agreements. A target/actual comparison of the delivered building materials is carried out by means of incoming goods inspection. Before and during the execution of construction work, compliance with technical regulations is documented using quality inspection plans.
