Silo 5NZ
Location Calenberger Str. 36 in Nordstemmen
An approx. 54 m high silo with a capacity of 80,000 tons of sugar is being built on the factory premises in Nordstemmen .
The silo has an internal diameter of 56 m and is being built from the floor slab up to a height of approx. 34.50 m using the sliding construction method.
A total of 39 tendon bearings are being used in the silo sliding wall in a subsequent bond. The silo roof is being erected as a timber truss construction in conical form. Züblin Timber was won as a subcontractor for this work. On the roof, the silo dome will be built as a steel structure using a compression ring with a belt bridge, also made of steel, which will serve as a connection to the elevator tower adjacent to silo 5. The elevator tower itself will also be built as a sliding construction up to a height of approx. 51 m.
The project is aiming for DGNB "Sustainable Building Site" certification from the German Sustainable Building Council.

Certified by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB)
Ed. Züblin AG is pursuing several goals with this project: A sustainable construction site organization, the conservation of resources as well as the minimization of emissions, responsibility for the health and well-being of the builders, the cultivation of good neighbourliness and, of course, high-quality construction. For this, Ed. Züblin AG was the first company to be recognized by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Selected measures in the project
-
Saving resources and reducing emissions through LEAN Construction
As part of the lean approach, a production plan with call-off dates (e.g. insulation) was created. Construction production planning is detailed on a weekly basis and adapted to actual production progress. Changes in the construction process are constantly taken into account and just-in-time deliveries can be better implemented. Repeat orders and new orders due to late changes to the plan are avoided.
-
Measures to prevent pollution from the construction site
The impact of the construction site is avoided or reduced as far as possible.
-
Energy management in construction
Construction site investigations and comparative considerations for the most energy-efficient project execution possible. For example, selection of a large concrete bucket to reduce the number of lifts.
-
Use of CO2-reduced concrete for the silo floor slab (CPM Basecrete)
By using a total of around 2,400 m³ of Basecrete concrete for the silo floor slab, significant CO2 emissions could be saved. The use of CPM-Basecrete and the associated reduction in the proportion of Portland cement clinker saves over 50% of CO2 emissions from concrete on the construction site.
