HS2 Highspeed Rail, London

High Speed Two (HS2), a high-speed rail link between London and Birmingham, is currently under construction, with further connections planned to Leeds and Manchester.

As part of the project, ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau was commissioned as a subcontractor of the consortium "SCS" (Skanska, Constain and STRABAG) for specialist foundation engineering work on two HS2 construction sites, South Ruislip and Victoria Road, North Acton. Two circular diaphragm wall shafts, a main shaft and a ventilation shaft, were constructed at South Ruislip. The work had to be carried out under logistical challenges and at a limited working height, as the flight path of the adjacent airport had to be taken into account.

The Victoria Road site involved the construction of a cross-over box in North Acton, which will initially serve as a TBM launch pit for the main London tunnels. ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau constructed a reinforced concrete diaphragm wall with a depth of 34 m. Due to the complex design of the reinforcement cages for the diaphragm wall, ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau decided to manufacture them on site in a specially built production facility. The 80-tonne diaphragm wall cages were then transported to the installation site, installed in the slot and concreted.
