Construction of a temporary building at the main station
Sub-project of the new Munich Central Station development
As part of the refurbishment and new-build works across the entire site of Munich Central Station, Ed. Züblin AG’s Bavaria division is constructing the interim station building for Munich Central Station. This structure is intended to serve as a temporary solution for InfraGO AG, enabling it to maintain ongoing operations whilst extensive construction work is carried out at the main station, whilst also providing space for various users and DB departments.
The building is being constructed in a confined space on a plot between the entrance to the U4/U5 construction site and the ‘Sofitel’ hotel along Bayerstraße, and partially covers a bunker and a sprinkler tank.
Circular economy promoted through design for disassembly
Once it has served as a temporary station building, the structure is to be dismantled. This fact is already being taken into account during the planning phase, with the aim of ensuring the sustainable reuse of the building – in terms of the materials and resources used – in accordance with the highest possible sustainability standards.
The project is aiming for DGNB ‘Sustainable Construction Site’ certification from the German Sustainable Building Council.

Standard operating procedures for construction sites
The working hours for the building site are usually as follows:
Monday to Friday: 7.00 am to 8.00 pm
Saturday: 7.00 am to 8.00 pm

Ed. Züblin AG is pursuing several objectives with this project: sustainable site organisation, the conservation of resources and the minimisation of emissions, responsibility for the health and wellbeing of construction workers, fostering good neighbourly relations and, of course, high-quality construction work. For this, Ed. Züblin AG was the first company to be recognised by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).

Selected measures within the project

Prefabricated components
The extensive use of prefabricated components (openwork ceilings, hollow walls, parapets, columns, beams and staircases) helps to reduce construction time. Similarly, the volume of waste is reduced thanks to pre-assembled orders.

Digital concrete order
To ensure the best possible coordination of concrete pouring operations, orders are placed via a digital application. Particularly in the case of large-scale concrete pouring operations, the flow rates can be adjusted to match the concrete pump, thereby reducing waiting times for the concrete mixers. This optimises production times and reduces noise emissions.

Resource conservation and emissions reduction through LEAN Construction
As part of the lean approach, a production plan with call-off dates (e.g. insulation) was drawn up. Construction production planning is detailed on a weekly basis and adjusted to reflect actual production progress. Changes arising from the construction process are taken into account on an ongoing basis, enabling just-in-time deliveries to be implemented more effectively. This avoids the need for repeat or new orders resulting from subsequent changes to the plan.

Measures to minimise disruption caused by the building site
The project is situated in an inner-city location; as such, disruption caused by the building site will be avoided or minimised as far as possible.
