Repair of the Ludwig Erhard Bridge

The Ludwig Erhard Bridge carries the B19 federal highway, Karlstraße, over the tracks in the northern station forecourt near Ulm Central Station. The existing bridge structure is in acute danger of parts of the parapet falling onto the tracks below due to severe corrosion of the retaining structure, which is why the bridge was ordered to be repaired.

Due to severe corrosion of the restraint, the caps with the contact protection had to be completely demolished and rebuilt with new caps. The transition structures were partially renewed in parallel with the new construction of the edge caps. In addition, the waterproofing and road surface on the bridge were completely removed and rebuilt.

In order not to permanently obstruct rail and road traffic, the work was carried out in sections in a total of ten construction phases. In addition, the scaffolding and the demolition of the bridge caps were sometimes only carried out during night-time rail closures in order not to endanger rail operations or the safety of employees.

Interesting facts and figures

  • 660m3 LP concrete for new bridge caps
  • 80 tons of reinforcing steel for new bridge caps
  • 6.300 m² bridge waterproofing (two-layer bituminous sheeting)
  • 4.200 m² asphalt protection layer made of asphalt concrete
  • 5.800 m² asphalt surface course made of asphalt concrete
