The pilgrimage church "Mary, Queen of Peace" was designed by Prof. Gottfried Böhm and built between 1965 and 1968. The roof shape of the church resembles a monumental folding structure with exposed concrete surfaces. Our TORKRET brand refurbished the folding roof structure using a completely new renovation concept.
Unavoidable thermal movements have led to concrete damage and water-bearing cracks in this historic building. In order to preserve this special exposed concrete architecture, RWTH Aachen University developed a completely new refurbishment concept with carbon-reinforced spray mortar. The aim of this: a mineral seal in textile-reinforced concrete construction.
Pilot phase and implementation of the renovation concept
In 2016, the Torkret brand of ZÜBLIN Bauwerkserhaltung was finally able to test the innovative process in a pilot section above the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. The very good test results over a service life of two years led to the commissioning of all other sections.
After the correct processing and reprofiling of concrete defects, the structural cracks and connection joints were covered with 3 millimetre thin, 18 centimetre wide elasticized debonding strips. A polymer-modified mortar was then applied in layers over the entire surface using the shotcrete and hand lay-up method with internal, two-layer epoxy resin-coated carbon reinforcement. Color pigments were added on site to the last remaining visible, exposed mortar layer. A shuttering board structure was then manually worked into the still fresh surface to restore the original appearance. Finally, a colorless hydrophobic coating was applied.
