Expansion of Vianden pumped storage plant

ZÜBLIN led a consortium to expand Europe's largest pumped storage power plant in Vianden, Luxembourg.

The integration of an additional, 11th machine increased the peak output by around 200 MW to almost 1,300 MW of turbine output, which the Société Electrique de L`Our (SEO) power plant has been able to feed into the European grid since commissioning.

The scope of services included the execution planning, the excavation and development of caverns for the nacelle (length 52 m, width 25 m, height 55 m) and transformers (length 45 m, width 11 m, height 15 m) as well as the excavation of 7 tunnels of different diameters with a total length of 1,530 m. From the existing upper basin, a 280 m deep pressure shaft with a diameter of 5.5 m was constructed using the raiseboring method, which was subsequently lined with steel armoring backed with concrete.

The following additional structures were included in the scope of work:

  • Inlet/outlet tower in the upper basin
  • Inlet/outlet tower in the lower basin
  • Portal structure for access tunnel 3
  • Deepening the bed of the lower basin
