Bonatz building

ZÜBLIN is modernizing the listed reception building of Stuttgart's main railway station - the Bonatzbau - from the ground up inside, while at the same time preserving its striking external appearance.

The core of the project is a house-in-house construction: after selective demolition of the old reinforced concrete structures, historic exterior walls and counter halls are secured by temporary bracing before a new supporting structure is erected inside. This will create a ground-level main access level with barrier-free access, supplemented by newly arranged service and retail areas; above this, light-flooded levels will be created for hotel, conference and catering uses. To the west of the existing building, ZÜBLIN is constructing an underground supply and disposal building for technical connections.

Ed. Züblin AG is responsible for the detailed design and turnkey implementation of the project. The project combines monument preservation and civil engineering: the tower, the terminus platform hall and the small and large ticket hall will be preserved as elements that characterize the cityscape, while the new interior structure will relieve the existing building fabric and upgrade it for future requirements. In addition, ZÜBLIN Umwelttechnik is supporting the construction site with modular construction water purification including measurement and data management.

Services at a glance

• Demolition & bracing: Selective demolition of the existing reinforced concrete structures within the natural stone exterior walls; temporary bracing and steel trusses to secure the historic shell.
• New shell construction inside: Production of the new load-bearing structures as a house-in-house construction; preparation for a ground-level main access level (approx. 1,750 m²) with barrier-free access.
• Underground supply and disposal building: Realization west of the existing building for technical connection.
• Addition of storeys & new uses: Additional, light-flooded levels for hotel, conference, restaurant and service areas; reorganization of retail and service areas at street level.
