Bornheim family pool
The newly built Bornheim family pool offers the citizens of Frankfurt a central meeting point for leisure, sport and recreation. The sustainable construction method, innovative technology and attractive architecture make it a showcase project for future-oriented pool construction
With the construction of the new Bornheim family pool, the city of Frankfurt is sending out a strong signal for contemporary leisure facilities, sustainability and urban quality. The project replaces the outdated Panoramabad and creates a modern facility that is suitable for families as well as school and club sports.
The design was created by the renowned firm 4a Architekten, known for its expertise in pool construction. The architecture impresses with a clear design language and a generous glass front that can be opened up to 15 meters, giving a real "outdoor pool feeling". The bathing level is around 3.50 meters above street level, above which is a sauna landscape with four themed saunas, a steam bath and relaxation areas. A roof terrace complements the wellness facilities and creates an additional quality of stay.
Sustainability played a central role in the planning and execution. The project was realized by ZÜBLIN as a DGNB-certified "sustainable construction site". The entire construction site was powered by green electricity, and digital processes such as coordinated concrete delivery reduced emissions and noise. A photovoltaic system with around 450 modules generates up to 150,000 kWh of electricity per year and saves around 60 tons of CO₂ emissions. In addition, the waste heat from the neighboring ice rink is used via heat pumps, and rainwater is used for toilet flushing and roof greening.
Our services as Ed. Züblin AG included the special civil engineering, the shell construction and the building envelope. The project comprises a water area of approx. 900 m², a gross floor area (GFA) of around 10,500 m² and a gross cubic capacity (GVC) of around 56,000 m³. The construction work was characterized by complex geological conditions: The site contained debris from the Second World War, including a 250-kilo bomb that had to be recovered safely. The foundations were laid using large bored piles in order to transfer the loads into load-bearing soil layers. There were also logistical challenges due to the location on Ratsweg, right next to the ice rink and the fairground, where major events such as the Dippemess are regularly held. Despite these difficulties, the project was successfully implemented.
After completion, the pool became the property of BäderBetriebe Frankfurt GmbH. The Bornheim family pool has created a central location for leisure, sport and recreation for the citizens of Frankfurt.
