Charité Berlin

At Charité Berlin, the refurbishment of the ward tower and the new construction of the OR/ITS building was successfully completed by Ed. Züblin AG and VAMED Health Project GmbH.

Renovation of the high-rise ward block and new construction of the OR/ITS building - two milestones for modern medicine

Two major construction projects were successfully completed at the Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin's traditional Mitte site: the comprehensive refurbishment of the high-rise ward block and the construction of a new state-of-the-art building for the operating theater, intensive care unit and emergency department. Both measures were realized under the management of the consortium Ed. Züblin AG and VAMED Health Project GmbH and mark an important step in the structural and medical development of one of the largest university hospitals in Europe - a strong foundation for medical care at the highest level.

Refurbishment of the bed tower

The iconic high-rise ward block on the Charité Campus Mitte was completely gutted and stripped back to its shell. This allowed the building to be fundamentally redesigned and given a modern, energy-efficient façade that meets current energy requirements and offers a contemporary appearance. After completion, comfortable and modern patient rooms will be available on 21 floors, equipped according to the latest medical and nursing standards. The room concepts take into account both patient needs and staff requirements. In addition to technical modernization, the focus was on a high quality of stay and functionality.

New OP/ITS building - The "Rudolf Nissen House"

The "Charité Emergency Center Mitte - Rudolf-Nissen-Haus" for operating theatres, intensive care and the emergency department was built in the immediate vicinity of the high-rise ward block at the same time as it was being renovated. The new building was completed in just two years - a remarkable success considering the complexity of the project. 11,000 m³ of concrete, 1,300 tons of steel and 75,000 m² of plasterboard were used. A central atrium provides natural light and a pleasant atmosphere. The building comprises 15 state-of-the-art operating theaters, including two hybrid operating theaters with integrated imaging for precise and gentle procedures. In addition, there are intensive care areas with 70 beds and an integrated rescue center for rapid emergency care.

Building quality and medical future

Both construction projects are exemplary for the combination of structural quality, technical innovation and medical excellence. The implementation by Ed. Züblin AG and VAMED Health Project GmbH was carried out in close coordination with the Charité and in accordance with the highest standards in hospital construction. The buildings are not only functional and efficient, but also prepared for future developments in the healthcare sector.

The refurbishment of the bed tower and the construction of the new OR/ITS building have sustainably strengthened Charité's infrastructure. The new rooms create optimal conditions for patient care, research and teaching - and make the Charité one of the most modern hospital locations in Europe.
