Location Leybergstraße 1 in Cologne
The current scope of work includes the refurbishment and conversion of the gymnasium and canteen as well as the redesign of the outdoor facilities.
The longer building complex comprises three storeys, while the shorter existing building consists of two. The north-eastern part of the main building is adjoined by a gymnasium with canteen and the assembly hall. The extension is detached from the existing building on the school grounds.
The current scope of work includes the renovation and conversion of the gymnasium and canteen as well as the redesign of the outdoor facilities. As part of the refurbishment, the gymnasium is to be converted into an all-day care facility with a canteen and space for around 150 pupils. Special attention is being paid to the preservation of many listed building elements. The façade, consisting of a concrete board structure, glass blocks, a specific color concept and the roof view will be rebuilt true to the original in close cooperation with the monument protection office. In the same way, the main entrance area with its specific layout of paths, cobblestones and flowerbeds will be planned and renovated as faithfully as possible in close cooperation with the Office for Green Spaces, due to the tree species worthy of preservation and current sustainability requirements. In the interior areas of the former gymnasium and in the inner courtyard, the old bricks, the surrounding wooden baffle walls including the fixtures such as a basketball hoop and a cupboard in the corridor and the tiles on the outside are being refurbished.
In addition to the refurbishment measures in line with the preservation order, the existing kitchen and dining areas are also being refurbished and converted. The former shower and changing areas will be converted into new cooling and storage areas. The former gymnasium will be divided into a total of five new areas, creating four all-day rooms and a further dining room. In addition, a further storey will be added to the former gymnasium above the new all-day rooms to accommodate the building services. The scope of work will be completed by adapting the remaining open spaces to the quality of the newly built extension.
The project is aiming for DGNB "Sustainable Building Site" certification from the German Sustainable Building Council.

Selected measures in the project
-
Saving resources and reducing emissions through LEAN Construction
As part of the lean approach, a production plan with call-off dates (e.g. insulation) was created. Construction production planning is detailed on a weekly basis and adapted to actual production progress. Changes in the construction process are constantly taken into account and just-in-time deliveries can be better implemented. Repeat orders and new orders due to late changes to the plan are avoided.
-
Noise abatement measures
By working in the existing corpus, the spread of noise can be reduced. Close coordination with the school management takes place in order to minimize disruption to ongoing school operations.
-
Quality assurance of building products used
The materials and building products used and installed are tested for their conformity with the list of building products to be assessed drawn up by the City of Cologne. When testing and evaluating the building products, the focus is on health compatibility with regard to the users of the building. The assessment is above the legal minimum standard.
