Extension and refurbishment of office building Ed. Züblin AG, Neu-Ulm
Fit for the future:
In the first construction phase, Ed. Züblin AG extended the Group building in Neu-Ulm with an extension in timber hybrid construction. In the second construction phase, the existing building was completely renovated.
The extension offers space for 46 office workstations, meeting rooms, tea kitchens and a cafeteria on three upper floors and a basement. The existing building was extensively renovated and modernized, partially extended and an L-shaped extension of around 2,000 m2 was added.
New building demonstrates the possibilities of timber construction
The extension was built using timber frame construction. Almost the entire supporting structure and the building envelope were made of wood. This work was carried out by ZÜBLIN Timber GmbH, the specialist for timber engineering construction, which is part of the ZÜBLIN Directorate in Ulm.
The focus was on the renewable raw material wood in order to demonstrate not only the performance of timber engineering construction but also the diverse structural and constructional potential of wood as a building material.
Compared to a corresponding building shell in pure reinforced concrete construction, the timber construction method reduced CO2 emissions during the construction phase by around a third; in total, 104 t of CO2 were saved.
The new building was ready for occupancy in May 2021, with overall completion of all construction measures in January 2022.
