School campus Allee der Kosmonauten
A milestone in Berlin's school construction offensive: modern school campus for 16,000 pupils.
Berlin's largest new school building to date has been built on Allee der Kosmonauten - a pioneering project commissioned by HOWOGE Wohnungsbaugesellschaft mbH, one of the largest municipal housing companies in Germany. The new campus combines innovative architecture, sustainable construction and an educational concept that promotes collaborative learning. With spacious learning areas, modern sports facilities and an open design, the project sets new standards for Berlin's educational landscape.
A school campus for collaborative learning
With the new building on Allee der Kosmonauten in Berlin-Lichtenberg, HOWOGE is setting a strong example for modern education as part of Berlin's school construction offensive. On a plot of around 38,000 square meters, a building complex was constructed in less than three years that combines two schools under one roof: an integrated secondary school with 900 places and a grammar school with 664 places. In total, the campus offers space for around 1,600 pupils, making it the largest new school building in Berlin's school construction offensive.
Architecture and concept: learning in compartments
The building follows the innovative compartment principle. Instead of traditional corridors and classrooms, the building is divided into 15 independent learning areas that function like small schools and are grouped around a common center. This center is formed by the spacious canteen on the first floor, supplemented by two stacked sports halls with three hall sections, an assembly hall, a library, workshops and a teaching kitchen. The outdoor areas are also tailored to the needs of the pupils: The approximately 33,000 square meter schoolyard features sports and recreation areas such as soccer and volleyball pitches, table tennis tables, bouldering facilities, a running track and a school garden.
Technical data and sustainability
With a gross floor area of around 32,000 square meters and a usable area of around 21,000 square meters, the five-storey building covers an area that creates optimal learning conditions. The construction is based on a concrete skeleton structure, combined with prefabricated façade elements made of wood and aluminum, which give the building a modern yet warm appearance. Sustainability played a central role: the campus meets the BNB silver standard for sustainable construction. Photovoltaic systems on the roof and retention areas for rainwater retention are part of the overall ecological concept and contribute to energy efficiency and resource conservation.
Partnerschaftliches Bauen
The project was implemented by a consortium consisting of ZÜBLIN, which took the technical lead, and OTTO WULFF. As the general contractor, ZÜBLIN was already involved in the planning phase and was able to contribute its expertise in school construction at an early stage. The handover to the district of Lichtenberg took place on schedule in spring 2024, so that the school could start operating in the 2024/2025 school year.
A milestone for Berlin
The school campus on Allee der Kosmonauten is a milestone for Berlin's educational landscape. It stands for modern architecture, sustainable construction and a pedagogical concept that focuses on collaborative learning.
