Replacement construction of the Hertha Peters Bridge in Peine
Cable-stayed bridge in steel construction
The Hertha Peters Bridge crosses the Mittelland Canal and federal highway 65 and connects the city center of Peine, the train station and the hospital with the southern districts of the city. It is an important part of the local and regional cycle and footpath infrastructure and facilitates direct routes to schools, local recreation areas and public facilities.
The original bridge made of tropical wood (bongossi), built in 1988, was severely damaged by fungal infestation and was no longer safe for traffic. The new replacement structure was built entirely of steel in order to create a durable, stable and filigree solution. The shape and position of the pylon is based on the previous bridge, creating an elegant landmark and providing sufficient clearance above the Mittelland Canal and the main road.
ZÜBLIN Stahlbau was responsible for the planning, production and assembly of the substructures, the 34 m high pylon and the 165 m long superstructure with two steel box girders and a girder grid in between. The substructures including the pylon were manufactured at the Hosena site, the superstructure in Sande. The 165 m long superstructure was produced in six segments up to 45 m long and delivered on time. Thanks to consistent, model-based work and assembly planning as well as close cooperation across locations, the lift-in could be implemented efficiently. The cables were tensioned directly as the superstructure was lowered in order to keep the delicate structure stable.
The bridge offers barrier-free access via ramps and a stair tower. Slender steel box girders and the diamond-shaped pylon create a homogeneous, elegant appearance. With a superstructure height of just 700 mm, the bridge is one of the most slender structures of its kind. The combination of filigree design, stable steel construction and precise implementation guarantees a long service life with low maintenance costs.
Despite challenging conditions, including the pandemic and supply bottlenecks, the project was completed on schedule. Today, the Hertha Peters Bridge reliably connects the south of Pein with the city center, the train station and the regional cycle paths towards Ilsede, Vechelde and Braunschweig.
This project illustrates the expertise of ZÜBLIN Stahlbau and Becker GmbH & Co. KG in complex bridge construction projects - from precise planning and cross-location production to the efficient assembly of sophisticated cable-stayed bridges. The Hertha Peters Bridge thus stands for modern infrastructure, well thought-out design and sustainable steel construction quality.
