New construction of the University Hospital Jena - 2nd construction phase

Ed. Züblin AG, Directorate East, Jena Division - together with the SF-Bau Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein Division - realized the turnkey new building in the second construction phase for the Jena University Hospital. Three building complexes with state-of-the-art infrastructure for care, research and teaching on a gross floor area of around 97,886 m² combine functionality, technology and flexibility.

Between July 2013 and September 2017, a central extension was built at Jena University Hospital in order to bring together the clinical disciplines, institutes and functional areas that were previously spread across various buildings at one location. As the general contractor, ZÜBLIN took on overall responsibility - from implementation planning and building construction services to the turnkey handover of the three building complexes.

Building structure and technical execution

The new buildings cover a gross floor area of 97,886 m² with a gross volume of 555,750 m³ and provide space for 710 beds and 14 operating theaters. They are designed as reinforced concrete skeleton constructions with flat ceilings and perforated façades. The façades combine single windows, external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) and post-and-beam elements and ensure a high-quality, functional building envelope.

In addition to the building construction, the scope of services also included the complete technical building equipment (TGA). This included permanently installed laboratory and medical technology, pneumatic tube and automatic goods transport systems as well as systems for supplying the medical centers with medical gases. The infrastructure for research and teaching was also fully integrated.

The outdoor facilities covering around 13 hectares were extensively redesigned and integrated into the traffic network. Paths, green spaces and recreational areas create orientation, quality of stay and an appealing environment for patients, visitors and staff. The new building was seamlessly integrated into the existing building through conversion and connection work, creating a functional, coherent clinic site.

Focus on care, research and teaching

The new building enables networked and interdisciplinary patient care and at the same time offers modern working and learning environments for research and teaching. The planning took into account high demands on quality of use, technical equipment, flexibility of the rooms and long-term optimization of operating costs. The project thus creates optimal conditions for clinical care, interdisciplinary collaboration and training at Jena University Hospital.

General contractor service: planning meets execution

ZÜBLIN was responsible for the entire process - from implementation planning (work phases 3-5) to turnkey handover. The technical complexity and scope of the construction site required precise coordination of all trades, supply chains and infrastructures. The combined planning and execution model enabled the project to be completed on schedule, taking into account medical standards and long-term flexibility of use.

Significance for location and client

The new building represents a milestone for the Jena University Hospital in terms of centralizing care, research and teaching and ensuring the hospital's long-term competitiveness. For ZÜBLIN, the project is an important reference building in the field of healthcare construction, successfully combining high technical complexity, state-of-the-art medical technology and large areas.
