Shipbuilding hall in Kiel
With its state-of-the-art submarine production hall, Züblin is setting new standards in shipbuilding in Kiel. The impressive hall complex, situated directly on the fjord, enables the production and repair of submarines and combines high-tech with maritime tradition.
State-of-the-art shipbuilding hall for submarine construction
On behalf of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems GmbH (tkMS), Ed. Züblin AG has completed a new turnkey shipbuilding hall on the Kiel shipyard site. Situated directly on the fjord, the hall complex will be used in future for the construction and maintenance of Type 212 CD submarines and is one of the most modern submarine construction facilities in the world.
Hall structure and integrated administration block
The project was carried out by a joint venture comprising ZÜBLIN’s Stuttgart division (structural engineering) and its Northern division (civil and port engineering). The Central Engineering Department of Ed. Züblin AG supported the project team with the detailed design. The new development comprises seven industrial halls separated from one another by concrete and fire-resistant walls, as well as an adjoining seven-storey administrative block containing office space, staff facilities and a canteen.
Impressive dimensions and quantities of materials
Measuring approximately 170 metres in length, up to 70 metres in width and 32 metres in height, the industrial building has a gross floor area of 15,390 m². The foundations were constructed using displacement piles in combination with a floor slab approximately one metre thick. Around 17,000 m³ of concrete, 3,900 tonnes of reinforcing steel and a further 2,500 tonnes of steel for the halls’ supporting structures were used in the construction.
