The new Axel Springer building

ZÜBLIN realized the spectacular thirteen-storey Axel Springer office building in Berlin – an iconic structure between history, future and architectural vision.

A new landmark in Berlin's former newspaper district

In the heart of Berlin, directly opposite the Axel Springer high-rise, a spectacular extension was built in 2019 for the transatlantic media company: The new Axel Springer building. The location is steeped in history – the building was constructed along the former course of the Berlin Wall, which symbolically runs through the building.

The light-flooded cube-shaped office building embodies Axel Springer's digital transformation and at the same time makes an architectural statement within the former Berlin newspaper district.

Architecture that impresses

The new Axel Springer building extends over thirteen storeys - eleven above ground and two below ground – and offers a total of over 52,000 m² of high-quality usable space. The interior of the building is characterized by interconnected terraces and an atrium.

The centerpiece is the 45-meter high and 120,000 m³ large atrium, which opens up towards the existing publishing building. The impressive atrium façade consists of a three-dimensionally folded glass structure, which characterizes the building and gives it a special lightness.

The lower half of the building is terraced into the atrium. The upper five storeys are "suspended" via a transfer structure on the top floor, above which there is a roof terrace for public use.

The three-dimensional glass façade of the atrium is harmoniously complemented by tinted glass surfaces and gold accents.

Modern working world

Upon completion in 2020, numerous central departments and brands of Axel Springer were relocated to the new building. The integrated newsroom of WELT with two TV studios also found its new home here.

The imposing atrium reinforces the open, communicative effect of the interior and creates an architecture that noticeably promotes exchange and transparency. In total, the new building offers workplaces for up to 3,500 employees – modern, flexible working environments that support communication and collaboration.

The green roof terrace with an impressive view over the Berlin skyline is the icing on the cake and creates an attractive retreat in the middle of the city.

Sustainability at a high level

The new Axel Springer building was built using sustainable construction methods and was awarded the DGNB Gold certificate. The project also received the Diamond Award for outstanding design and architectural quality.

Successful implementation in the partnership model

The highly complex construction project was realized by our Stuttgart and North directorates using the ZÜBLIN teamconcept partnership model.
