Göttingen University Hospital (UMG) NIKO
NIKO marks the start of one of Germany’s largest hospital construction projects at Göttingen University Hospital. The state-of-the-art new building will bring together key medical functions and set new standards for efficient, forward-looking healthcare in southern Lower Saxony.
A new building for the medicine of tomorrow
The NIKO project is creating a pioneering new hospital building at Göttingen University Hospital that brings together key medical functions in a single location. The name stands for the departments of A&E, intensive care, nursingand the surgical centre, which will in future be consolidated within a state-of-the-art building complex.
Given its scale and significance, the project ranks among the most important healthcare construction projects in Germany. The new building will lay the foundations for modern, efficient and patient-centred care, and will strengthen Göttingen University Hospital’s long-term position as the region’s leading healthcare and research centre.
Complex hospital construction whilst the hospital remains open
Ed. Züblin AG has been commissioned to carry out the structural work. The project is being implemented jointly by the Stuttgart and Northern Regional Offices, which are contributing their respective experience and expertise to this challenging large-scale project. Once the deep foundation works have been completed, the structural shell of a ten-storey building complex with a gross floor area of around 112,000 m² will be erected by mid-2028.
The project is being carried out on the existing hospital campus and therefore in a particularly sensitive environment. Careful planning and coordination of all construction processes are essential to maintain hospital operations throughout the construction period and ensure that patient care is not disrupted.
The contract awarded to Ed. Züblin AG, Stuttgart office, covers the construction of the building shell and represents an important milestone on the path to the new medical centre at Göttingen University Hospital.
New dimensions in healthcare
Following its completion in 2029 and subsequent commissioning, NIKO will form the new emergency medical centre at Göttingen University Hospital. Plans include a total of 31 operating theatres, two rooftop helipads and 624 beds, including 204 intensive care beds. With these facilities, the project will lay the foundations for meeting the growing demands of modern cutting-edge medicine and for strengthening healthcare provision in southern Lower Saxony in the long term.
Contribution to a future project
The construction of the new NIKO building will not only create a modern hospital complex, but also form a key component of tomorrow’s medical infrastructure. The project combines high technical standards, complex construction processes and exceptional social significance. By participating in this major project, ZÜBLIN is making an important contribution to the further development of one of Germany’s leading university hospitals.
